Description
Cedarwood hydrosol is a floral water produced as a byproduct of the steam distillation process used to extract cedarwood essential oil from the wood of cedar trees, primarily from species like Cedrus atlantica, Cedrus deodara, or Juniperus virginiana.
During the steam distillation process, where cedarwood chips or shavings are steamed, the aromatic compounds are carried over with the steam. Upon condensation, two products are formed: the essential oil and the hydrosol. The essential oil, being lighter than water, floats on the surface and is separated, leaving behind the hydrosol.
Cedarwood hydrosol contains traces of the water-soluble components from the cedarwood, lending it a mild, woody, and slightly earthy fragrance reminiscent of cedar. However, compared to the essential oil, the aroma of the hydrosol is much lighter and less concentrated.
Similar to other hydrosols, cedarwood hydrosol can possess some properties associated with cedarwood, such as potential soothing or skin-supporting attributes. It is often used in skincare products, natural perfumery, or as a mild aromatic spray due to its subtle fragrance and potential benefits.
